TECHNOLOGY CLASSES FOR THE DEAF NOW OFFERED AT ELMHURST COLLEGE
A+/PC Technology Certification Taught in Sign Language
ELMHURST, Ill., June 14, 2002 -- A unique and innovative training program for the deaf will be offered this summer at Elmhurst College. This program, a collaboration between Elmhurst Partners, the corporate training arm of Elmhurst College, and The Information Group (IMG), a Chicago-based IT services firm, is being offered to both older high school students and to adults.
Designed specifically for the deaf, classes will be taught by a fully certified instructor (also deaf) who will train students to become computer hardware technicians, a field that is constantly growing. Classes will be taught in American Sign Language (not SEE) and students will learn proper computer technology signs.
This five-week course will teach students how to diagnose and repair hardware problems, add components, load operating systems and more. The class will also prepare students for a certification test as an “A+/PC Technician,” a designation preferred by computer retailers and repair centers.
Beginning July 24 and continuing through August 22, classes will meet for five weeks, tow afternoons per week (Wednesdays and Thursdays) from 2-7 p.m. on the Elmhurst College campus at 190 Prospect Avenue, Elmhurst. Plans are under way to offer this program again in the fall of 2002.
According to Sparks-Chellee Phillips, an IMG instructor, “What better role models can our deaf children have than those of deaf adults who successfully improve their lives through education, have better career opportunities and have increased their earning potential?”
For cost information and to register for classes, please call David Loofbourrow, Director of Elmhurst Partners at (630) 617-8777.
